AUGUST= BACK TO SCHOOL=TRAFFIC

Greetings everyone!
Welcome back to school for those who celebrate (participate) and for everyone else … it really just means an increase in traffic.

I have enjoyed the summer! Pause to reflect on all your summer fun- longer days, ample sunshine, time spent outside, fresh veggies and seafood on your beach trip...ahhh! I want to comment on how to prepare for the winter- NOW!

Vitamin D

I am an advocate for working on bolstering your vitamin D levels now-before they dip in the winter months. Vitamin D is important since it helps your body absorb calcium to build strong bones. You can increase your Vitamin D by direct sunlight exposure and food intake. Foods naturally high in vitamin D include fish ( Salmon, Mackerel, and Sardines) Keep in mind that farm raised fish has considerably less Vitamin D in most cases than wild caught fish. Foods fortified with Vitamin D include milk, orange juice and cereals. Also, mushrooms are advertised as having Vitamin D, but that is only if they are UV exposed/ treated.

The Vitamin D lab test is almost never covered by insurance, but I like to get it done in the November time frame. This is especially true if you have a history of running low on Vitamin D during the winter season. Please let me know if you would like that checked ( this is an additional laboratory charge ~$25) .

Calcium

Secondly, and closely connected, is the question of ”‘too much vitamin D”. Yes! That is a
thing … much like too much Vitamin A (Thus, the reason I am not a big advocate of cod liver oil). Too much Vitamin D can lead to excessive calcium and even elevated phosphorus levels in some folks. Elevated Vitamin D can also make labs look like someone having Hyperparathyroidism, which is seen in 1-2% of the adult population.

Mildly elevated calcium can lead to the classic rhyme of ‘Bones, Stones,
Thrones, Groans, and Psych Overtones.’
(according to my wife, this is a only a classic rhyme for physicians and no one else has heard it)
  • -Bones= Bone remodeling issues (usually weakening)
  • -Stones= Kidney Stones
  • -Thrones= Lets just say, bowel irregularities
  • -Groans= Abdominal pains
  • -Psychiatric Overtones= Neurological issues such as: fatigue, forgetfulness, etc…
I have MULTIPLE patients with elevated calcium and possibly more undetected since the symptoms could indicate other root problems. Elevated calcium is more prevalent in people in their 50’s and older ( and that includes ME! Yikes!)

balance - Mayo Clinic

So, as we frequently say in the military

BLUF- Bottom Line Up Front

Feel free to take the recommended Vitamin D (600-800 International Units-IU) daily and
Calcium 1,000 mg.

BUT, if you are taking higher doses of Calcium and Vitamin D and experiencing vague symptoms as noted above; let’s test your Vitamin D and Calcium to make sure you are not overdoing it as we prepare for the winter short days and decline in sunlight exposure AND Verify you do not have Hyperparathyroidism.

ALLERGY TESTING & TREATMENT

The Multi-panel outdoor allergy test included trees, weeds, grasses, molds, mites, and various animals.

Sublingual immunotherapy, also called allergy drops, works like allergy shots by gradually helping your body tolerate whatever causes your allergies. The difference is instead of getting an injection, the antigen (allergy causing substance) is given under your tongue in a painless liquid drop form.

Allergy drop benefits:
  • Take at home, or wherever you are, three times daily. No weekly office visits needed.
  • Custom prescription based on your history, exam, and allergy testing.
  • Treats the cause of your allergies, rather than masking the symptoms.
  • Lowers allergy related costs over time
If you’re interested in testing your allergies and treating the root cause of your allergies, please fill out the Allergy Testing Interest Form . Non-members may sign up to receive allergen Testing- prior to August.

Do you know if you have allergies or would be a good candidate for allergy treatment? Take this allergy quiz to assess your allergy needs.
