Fall is FINALLY here! Praise the Lord!
The first bit of cool weather last weekend gave such a reprieve from the heat and brings out all the pumpkin spice sentiments. Robyn and I have enjoyed feedback from our newsletters and we have had requests for additional nutritional information. This month, we will address Vitamin B-12.

Vitamin B-12

While there are a plethora of B vitamins, B-12 has quite a name for itself by helping with red blood cell production and brain and nerve cell function. It is naturally found in clams, fish, chicken, dairy, and eggs ( sadly, not in pumpkin spice). There are also numerous methods to supplement Vitamin B-12 uptake. Many people get Vitamin B-12 shots for energy and I can anecdotally see positive benefits. Others take oral B-12 because they consume a vegan diet and B-12 is found in animal products. There are individuals who need regular shots of B-12 because they cannot absorb it properly during digestion and this malabsorption leads to an anemia known as pernicious anemia. Lastly, people take B-12 orally or by injection under skin (subcutaneously) for nerve or cognitive function maximization. This cognitive function optimization has become extremely popular and is what “the kids” call “B12-Maxxing.”

There is a lot of truth that as we age our overall stomach acidity decreases. That acidity is needed for Vitamin B12 absorption. Therefore, it is easy to understand why Vitamin B-12 shots have a positive effect on middle aged and older folks. Also, this Vitamin may need to be supplemented if you have had intestine surgery or other inflammatory bowel diseases ( Crohn’s, IBS, etc).

Vitamin B-12 is a water soluble vitamin considered to have a low toxicity. HOWEVER, people who take larger doses do complain of acne issues, palpitations, anxiety, headaches, and even insomnia (poor sleep).

Crossbridge DPC has an injectable B-12 available in the office but I recommend getting lab testing (MMA-Methylmalonic Acid- or B12 blood test) before starting replacement doses. If lab testing is not desired, PLEASE communicate if you are on larger dose vitamins and having any “odd” or listed side effects. If you stop B-12 vitamin supplementation due to side effects, know that it will likely be a month before the side effect resolves.

October Perimenopause Lecture

Please sign up for our Truth in Hormone Replacement Peri-Menopause lecture for females this month, October 20th or 22nd ( depending on responses). While many people talk about October as Breast Cancer Awareness month, I am talking about the whole female during this stage of life. This is a free educational event for all our Crossbridge DPC members and extended to our friend and family community on Tuesday , October 20th at 6:30 pm or Thursday October 22nd at 6:30 pm. Just fill out the google form to let us know which session and how many attendees. I know interest is very high on this topic. Men are invited as well since peri-menopausal symptoms can impact relationships on many levels. This is NOT for kids to attend, sorry!

Starting at age 42, and typically concluded by age 55, females will experience some symptoms of perimenopause. Ranging from severe to minor, I hear about these symptoms frequently. Our goal is to provide some education on the topic and offer safe options for treatment, not just the same old, ‘It’s just part of getting old’ conversation.

We will address supplements, HRT (Hormone replacement therapy) both topical and oral, current best practices vs old data, as well as good lifestyle changes as you or a loved one moves closer or into this stage of life. There will be some time for questions afterward; however, education will be the goal.

ALLERGY TESTING & TREATMENT

The Multi-panel outdoor allergy test included trees, weeds, grasses, molds, mites, and various animals.

Sublingual immunotherapy, also called allergy drops, works like allergy shots by gradually helping your body tolerate whatever causes your allergies. The difference is instead of getting an injection, the antigen (allergy causing substance) is given under your tongue in a painless liquid drop form.

Allergy drop benefits:
  • Take at home, or wherever you are, three times daily. No weekly office visits needed.
  • Custom prescription based on your history, exam, and allergy testing.
  • Treats the cause of your allergies, rather than masking the symptoms.
  • Lowers allergy related costs over time
If you’re interested in testing your allergies and treating the root cause of your allergies, please fill out the Allergy Testing Interest Form . Non-members may sign up to receive allergen Testing- prior to December.

Do you know if you have allergies or would be a good candidate for allergy treatment? Take this allergy quiz to assess your allergy needs.
